Angels are love

The Highest Angel

No picture could ever do this angel justice. An arch angel of the most high God. So much love and energy.

This Angel is sits on a Throne in the same vortex as the Most High God. Enoch walked with God. He records mankinds actions in the Book of Life. This Angel knows what it is to be Human. I promise you, the energy of this is right to my soul. I love you Metatron.

Here is vast knowledge that I have collected for years. I chant and call upon this Angel, to tell God I love him, and put it under Jesus. Remember God loved the world so much he sent his only begotten son.

I respect all religions, I love all ideas. If you don’t believe, that is Okay, God bless you and your path in this world. But I find true love in this.

THIS IS MY WEBSITE, AND I HONOR HIS MAJESTY LORD METATRON, A CHILD OF THE MOST HIGH GOD.

Metatron is a powerful angel who teaches people how to use their spiritual power for good while he records their choices in the universe’s great archive (known either as God’s book of life or the Akashic record).

Some believers say that Metatron is one of only two angels (the other is Archangel Sandalphon) who was first a human being. It is believed he was the prophet Enoch from the Torah and the Bible before ascending to heaven and becoming an angel. Metatron’s experience living on Earth as a person gives him a special ability to relate to people who want to connect with him. Here are some signs of Metatron’s presence:

Flashes of Brilliant Light

You may see bright flashes of light whenever Metatron is visiting you, believers say, because he has a fiery presence that may manifest in the form of a crystalline body or colorful aura.

In their book, “Gnostic Healing: Revealing the Hidden Power of God,” authors Tau Malachi and Siobhan Houston suggest meditating and then envisioning Metatron appearing as a “crystalline light-body complete with the seven interior stars and the three channels, and the spiritual sun in the heart.” They continue: “Take up the chant Sar Ha-Olam, and envision a ray of light shooting up through the central channel from the spiritual sun in your heart and appearing as a holy star of white brilliance above your head. With the chant Torahkiel Yahweh, imagine that this star magically transforms into the image of Archangel Metatron.”

Author Doreen Virtue writes in her book , “Archangels 101,” that Metatron’s aura is “deep pink and dark green” and that Metatron often uses a brilliantly lit cube (known as “Metatron’s Cube” in sacred geometry because it’s reminiscent of Ezekiel’s chariot that the Torah and the Bible describe as made of angels and powered by flashes of light). Metatron uses that cube to heal people of unhealthy energies that they want to clear out of their lives. Virtue writes, “The cube spins clockwise and uses centrifugal force to push away unwanted energy residue. You can call upon Metatron and his healing cube to clear you.”

Yet that is exactly what is achieved by Metatron’s Cube and some other shapes in ‘Sacred Geometry’.

The Angel Metatron and his amazing ‘Cube’ Who was Metatron?

Mythically, Metatron was originally human, elevated to archangel by God for his services as scribe. Foremost communicator between humans and the divine, he is best known for his ‘cube’, shown above Angel Metatron, right.

The Flower of Life – A specific regular repeating pattern of circles rotating around a central point, shown – contains a vast Akashic system of information (kind of, short hand for the entire planet’s memory), including templates for the five Platonic Solids – Key Sacred Shapes which are the building blocks of creation. If you think this is far fetched, read on – in a moment you will see the shapes appear as if by magic.

A Crop Circle

Sacred Geometry, by the way, is where the ‘mystery of all creation’ meets science, and any sceptics out there might enjoy further study, which will transport you from the Atomic Tables via mathematics to the myth of Atlantis and crop circles in the wink of an eye (which, as you will discover, embodies a very special shape known as a vesica piscis, and more, much more…)

Metatron is linked with Thoth –(or possibly, Metatron IS Thoth – ancient figure who pops up many times through esoteric history, said to have reincarnated many times from pre-history, Atlantis, Ancient Egypt, even to today, possibly AKA Drunvalo Melchizedek.

Metator’ is latin for a guide or measurer, which is certainly akin to this cube. ‘Metatron’ also refers to the ‘Keter’ or crown in the Kabbalah ‘Tree’ – an ancient picture of the Chakra System. The Kabbalah Tree is based on the ‘Flower of Life’ – no doubt, as Madonna could tell you! See Blue Outline above – how The Kabbalah Tree is derived from The Flower of Life.

Anyway, I shall be your guide through this vast landscape of ‘weird shape fractal zodiac geomancy’ – whatever that is!

According to this theological material, Enoch (Metatron) is responsible for transmitting the secrets of the Written Torah as well as the Oral Tradition. “And Metatron brought them out from his house of treasuries and committed them to Moses, and Moses to Joshua, and Joshua to the elders, and the elders to the prophets and the prophets to the men of Great Synagogue…”[17]

In late Merkabah, Metatron (Enoch) is the guide and the revealer of secrets to all who are initiated into the account of chariots.[18] Hekhaloth literature (3 EnochShi’ur Qomah) describes these functions of Metatron. He guides and reveals secrets to R. Ishmael and to R . Akiba. Sometimes the Merkabah narrative extends his role to the titles of the Prince of Wisdom and the Prince of Understanding.[19]
It is apparent that in 2 Enoch one may see some kind of preparation of Enoch for his role as Metatron, “the Knower of Secrets.” The preparation entails several stages. First, the archangel Vereveil inducts Enoch into these secrets.

He instructs Enoch in “all the deeds of the Lord, the earth and the sea, and all the elements and the courses…and the Hebrew language, every kind of language of the new song of the armed troops and everything that it is appropriate to learn” (23.1-2). Second, the Lord himself continues to instruct him in the secrets, which he had not even explained to the Angels (24.3). Finally, the Lord promised Enoch the role of “Knower of Secrets.”

The important detail here is that the promise of the role is closely connected with other titles of Metatron such as “The Prince of Presence,” “The Heavenly Scribe,” and “The Witness of the Judgment.” In the text the Lord promised:

…and you will be in front of my face from now and forever.[20] And you
will be seeing my secrets[21] and you will be scribe for my servants[22]
since you will be writing down everything that has happened on earth
and that exists on earth and in the heavens, and you will be for me a witness of the judgment[23] of the great age (36.3).

This substantial passage graphically depicts the interrelation of the future roles of Enoch (Metatron) in the narrative of 2 Enoch. In spite of the fact that the text does not elaborate the real embodiments of these roles and titles, but only promises and initiations in these roles, it leaves the impression that 2 Enoch is part of larger tradition and that its author has prior knowledge of the future development of these titles and the deeds behind them.

It is intriguing that the narrative of 2 Enoch does not show the promised powerful deeds of Enoch-Metatron in different offices of the heavenly realm, for example, those of the Knower, The Scribe, The Witness and The Prince of Presence even in early “primitive” Merkabah or apocalyptic form. It looks as if the author of the text deliberately avoids these details. He knows that it is not time for revealing these faces. Enoch must return to the earth, and only after that trip he will fully assume his heavenly offices. In 67.2, which serves as the conclusion to Enoch’s story, there is a statement about the theme: “and the Lord received him and made him stand in front of his face for eternity.”[24]

In this regard, the narratives of 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch seem to be written from different temporal perspectives. The setting of Enoch’s story in 2 Enoch is the antediluvian period. Melchizedek”s narrative of the book distinctively stresses this point. This explains why in 2 Enoch “there is no place for Abraham, Moses, and the rest.”[25]

Salutations in the Light of the Great Seth (Shin-Tau)!

Torahkiel literally means “Torah of God” or the “Law of God,” and Yahweh literally means “That Which Was, Is and forever Shall Be,” these two sayings placed together become a fascinating contemplation; Torahkiel can also be translated as the “Word of God” and Yahweh can be translated as the “Eternal Continuum” or “Light Continuum,” which may take the contemplation even deeper.

These two names together as one holy name of Archangel Metatron indicate Metatron as the Angel of the Supernal Shekinah, the interior Divine Presence, who spoke to the prophet Moses in the giving of the Ten Commandments; the aspect appearing to Moses, of course, was Archangel Sandalfon, the Angel of the Shekinah manifest. Thus, this is the Great Maggid at the burning bush speaking the Essential Name of the Most High (Eheieh Asher Eheieh) and the Great Maggid speaking the Holy Law that would open the way for the coming of the Messiah.

In this we may understand a very esoteric allusion when the masters of the tradition teach that rather than Moses and Elijah appearing in the Transfiguration, it was Enoch and Elijah, for as the Great Maggid of the Supernal Shekinah it was Metatron that transmitted the Holy Law to Moses, and likewise, Enoch ascended in divine rapture just as Elijah ascended – according to the Book of Kings, Elijah ascended by a whirlwind.

As this holy name proposes, Metatron is the pure emanation of the Light Continuum, Yahweh, the essence of which is Eheieh, the Divine I Shall Be.

Now according to the Kabbalah, the tradition, creation is founded upon the Holy Torah – with Ten Holy Utterances creation comes into being, and with Ten Holy Commandments the Divine Intention (Ratzon) of creation comes into being, the generation of the Human One of Light, the enlightened human being.

Ten Utterances, Ten Commandments, these are the powers of the Ten Holy Sefirot – the Torah finds its fulfillment in the Holy Gospel in which the Ten Commandments are unified as One Holy Commandment, “Love one another as I have loved you,” the Holy Commandment of Melekh Messiah, the Human One of Light, Metatron being the Great Maggid of the Messiah, the One Anointed with Supernal Light.

The Holy Name of the Messiah is Yeshua (Yoshua), which contains the Great Name of Yahweh with the addition of the Holy Letter Shin, the letter of the Holy Shekinah, the Divine Presence; of the Messiah it is said that he is as the Ladder of Lights that Jacob saw in his dream at Bet El, upon which angels of God ascended and descended, the Gate of the Great Ascension.

If in the Jewish Kabbalah the holy name of Archangel Metatron at the giving of the Holy Torah is Torahkiel Yahweh (or Yod-He-Vau-He), then in the Christian Kabbalah with the coming of the Messiah and proclamation of the Holy Gospel this holy name becomes Torahkiel Yoshua (or Yod-He-Shin-Vau-He), the Word of God, the Light Continuum, delivers!

This was known to Enoch and Elijah, as to King Melchizedek, and was embodied and transmitted in Adonai Yeshua Messiah; the world receives this through the Messiah, specifically the Risen Messiah, Hayyah Yeshua (the Living Yeshua).

Now, when we intone this Holy Name, whether as Torahkiel Yod-He-Vau-He or as Torahkiel Yahweh it is the same Light-presence and Light-power of the Great Maggid, but according to how it is intoned there are different manifestations of the matrix of this Divine Power; as you have noted, Yod-He-Vau-He is linear, like a ladder stretching from heaven to earth, and Yahweh (pronounced: IAOWAY) is like a swirling, spiral, circular movement. Each has its use on a theurgic level, and each has its own kavvanot when intoned.

The kavvanah at the beginning of both is the same – it is kavvanah upon the Holy Law or Torah, the union of the soul with the Holy Law as with the greater prophets, the greater navim (seers); this empowers to the intoning of the Great Name, for in union with the Holy Law one does not intone it, but rather the Holy Shekinah, through which the Law and the Name are given, intones it – it is the only way it is rightly spoken or intoned.

The full power and essence of the Holy Law, of course, is the Messiah, the pure emanation of the First Commandment – the Gospel of the Messiah to the Holy Law being as Eheieh to Yahweh; thus the secret kavvanah when intoning Torahkiel is Melekh Messiah, specifically Hayyah Yeshua.

When Yod-He-Vau-He is intoned the kavvanot are the four Olamot: Yod, the Ten Names; He, the Archangels; Vau, the Orders of Angels; He final, the Celestial Spheres or Sphere of Mazlot (fortune or destiny) – this is the manifestation of Yahweh, the Light Continuum as the Great Luminous Assembly, the Sphere of Mazlot implying the Community of Israel, the assembly of tzaddikim and navim of the Divine Order.

When Yahweh (IAOWAY) is intoned the kavvanah is the union of the Supernal Universe and Matrix of Creation, the Pleroma of Light and Entirety – or else, the union of the two Great Ofanim, Metatron and Sandalfon, Hua.

The truth is the same, either way, but the movement of the Light-power in our Body of Light and the Sacred Circle is different, as you have noted in your own experience.

If we are to speak of kavvanot, they are the concentration of the mind and heart – all thought and desire on a single “object” of focus, and in such focused awareness thought and desire cease, and there is pure conscious intention, the full spiritual power of our soul’s will and love; whatever is willed in this way, in submission to the Ratzon of El Elyon, the Supreme, will come to pass as it is intended, as it is willed, every time.

This invocation of Metatron is rather like a lightening bolt version of the Great Convocation, whether by way of the linear or circular Sefirot.

Now Yod-He-Vau-He is the manifestation of four Gates of Light in the four directions of the Sacred Circle, so that these Holy Letters may be envisioned in the Four Directions; Yahweh is the manifestation of two Gates of Light, above and below, in the height and in the depth, so that “Yah” may be envisioned above and “Weh” below – Torahkiel is the Word of God by which this will come to pass, the Holy Law upon which heaven and earth are founded.

*There is another kavvanah with Yod-He-Vau-He which is all of the Holy Letter spelt out in full – those who understand might contemplate this.

As we have alluded to above, in place of Yod-He-Vau-He we may also intone Yod-He-Shin-Vau-He, also Yod-He-Vau-Shin-He; with the former is the kavvanah of the Messiah in the ascension and the outpouring of Supernal Fire, and with the latter it is the Second Coming, the Messiah in the Apocalypse – the initial kavvanah with Torahkiel remaining the same, kavvanah upon the Holy Torah. These two give insight into the emergence of the Holy Gospel from the Torah, the Holy Gospel hidden within the Torah.

Now there are also four different ways to intone Yod-He-Vau-He corresponding with Hokmah, Binah, Tiferet and Malkut – with a, i, o and u, respectively; the kavvanot of these is the Tetragrammaton manifest as the corresponding Sefirah, four principle grades of the Light Transmission; if and when Shin is added, the inmost essential grade of Light Transmission becomes the kavvanah, or else, the Light Transmission of Messiah manifest in these four grades.

*As you might imagine, various permutations of the Great Name may be used to bring about different theurgic intentions.

All of this is knowledge of the Word of God manifest in the Light Continuum (Yahweh), corresponding to Divine Wisdom, Hokmah – Reshit, the point beyond which there is nothing knowable.

All of this contains knowledge of the Path of the Great Ascension; thus, when understood, the invocation of Metatron by this holy name can lead to prophetic consciousness when the Holy Spirit enters to illuminate and elevate the soul.

May all souls be drawn up in the Path of the Great Ascension – may all souls be as holy angels ascending and descending in the Mystical Body of the Risen Savior, the Supernal Merkavah; amen.

Shabbat Shalom!

You dont know what you have until its gone

Instead of remembering that mistake, that failure, what you didn’t do right…

You don’t know how much something means to you, how precious it is, until it is gone.

That one error, I just, can I forgive myself?

God will forgive you, can you forgive yourself ?

God accepts you, now can you accept yourself?

I don’t know Joel – you don’t know my past. He says, God was not surprised when you made that mess, he created you, you didn’t surprise him.

Joel has inspired me. I am not with any religious group, but respect all of them. Would be great to visit Texas and see Joel.

Personally I have gone to impossible lengths to change my destiny. All things are possible with God.

Love, Peace, Joy, Respect, Compassion, Grace, and Mercy.

Life Is Too Short for Regrets

TO MY BROTHERS:

BROTHER, LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WAKE UP WITH REGRETS – LOVE THE PEOPLE WHO TREAT YOU RIGHT.

FORGIVE THE ONES WHO DON’T JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN. BELIEVE EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON.

“Everything happens for a reason.”

The philosopher Aristotle explains it perfectly.

In his quest to discover the true meaning of life, he suggested there were two constants in life:

First, the universe is constantly changing and evolving. What it is today is never the same tomorrow.

Second, he referred to entelechy, which is “that which turns potential into reality.”

IF YOU GET A SECOND CHANCE – JUST DO THE BEST YOU CAN.

LEARN.

YOU ARE WORTH IT.

IF IT CHANGES YOUR LIFE, LET IT.

TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU REACT WHEN YOU’RE MAD. FORGIVE QUICKLY. GOD NEVER SAID LIFE WOULD BE EASY. HE JUST PROMISED IT WOULD BE WORTH IT.

TO THE COOL MEN THAT HAVE TOUCHED MY LIFE, HERE’S TO YOU!! A REAL BROTHER WALKS WITH YOU WHEN THE REST OF THE WORLD WALKS ON YOU.

THE MOST REWARDING THING TO DO IS HELP OTHERS.

I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU.

live more passionately

On September 20th, 2013 this website was launched.

Today marks an important event. It has been precisely 7 years, 11 months, and 28 days since I first created and posted here. I was in tech school at the time. It will be 8 years on the 20th.

What has changed since 2013. Can you remember 2013?

It doesn’t seem that long ago – but it will be 8 years! WOW!

Where will we all be in 8 more years… Perhaps it would be the proper time to read some poetry.

What is Poetry?

Writing a poem is not about bringing some words together to create some charming sentences.

It’s so much deeper than that. Writing poetry is a bridge that allows people to express their feelings and make others live every single word they read.

Poetry is to educate people, to lead them away from hate to love, from violence to mercy and pity.

Writing poetry is to help this community better understand life and live it more passionately.

Who is John Donne? One of the most famous poets.

I personally had no idea who this was, but looking for some great poems I came across this great man named John Donne. Here is some information on him.

His great education and poetic talents, Donne lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends.

He spent much of the money he inherited during and after his education on womanizing, literature, pastimes, and travel.

In 1601, Donne secretly married Anne More, with whom he had twelve children.[5]

In 1615 he was ordained deacon and then Anglican priest, although he did not want to take Holy Orders and only did so because the king ordered it.

He also served as a member of Parliament in 1601 and in 1614.

John Donne was an English poet, scholar, soldier and secretary born into a recreant family, who later became a cleric in the Church of England.

Under royal patronage, he was made Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Donne’s love poetry was written nearly 400 years ago; yet one reason for its appeal is that it speaks to us as directly and urgently as if we overhear a present confidence.

Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone,

Let maps to others, worlds on worlds have shown,

Let us possess one world, each hath one, and is one.

Some of Donne’s finest love poems, such as “A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning,” prescribe the condition of a mutual attachment that time and distance cannot diminish:

Dull sublunary lovers’ love

(Whose soul is sense) cannot admit

Absence, because it doth remove

Those things which elemented it.

But we by a love, so much refined,

That our selves know not what it is,

Inter-assured of the mind,

Care less, eyes, lips, and hands to miss.

Ah yes, is it better to have love, then lost – then ever to love at all?

It is a very powerful emotion. The man who can completely control that emotion, is strong indeed.

Someday someone will break you. And then, you will become unbreakable.

Get in the best shape of your life

I am wanting to be the best version of myself. More fit and healthy then in my entire life. Lets talk about: Serotonin, Endorphins, Enzymes.

Serotonin impacts every part of your body, from your emotions to your motor skills. Serotonin is considered a natural mood stabilizer. It’s the chemical that helps with sleeping, eating, and digesting. Serotonin also helps:

  • reduce depression
  • regulate anxiety
  • heal wounds
  • stimulate nausea
  • maintain bone health

Feel good after a long walk? These biochemicals are called endorphins. While endorphins might make you feel good after a long jog, there’s a lot more to know about the role they play in regulating your body.

Enzymes help speed up chemical reactions in the human body. They bind to molecules and alter them in specific ways. They are essential for respiration, digesting food, muscle and nerve function, among thousands of other roles.

Anyone battling a depressive disorder knows how bleak life can feel. Sometimes, you’d try almost anything to make those black clouds go away. I have helped loved ones battle this, with such a great cost. I wish I knew how to prevent the depression before just treating it. This is where my research is leading me.

Understandably, the idea that a few pills can make you feel better seems too good to be true.

Unfortunately, this often IS too good to be true.

(Getty Images)

Depression is the world’s single largest contributor to disability. It affects an estimated 350 million people globally, which is around 4.4% of the world’s population.

In fact, the number of people with common mental disorders is increasing year by year, with the fastest-growing rates in lower-income countries. The World Health Organization estimates that 10% to 15% of the general population will experience clinical depression in their lifetime – including 5% of men and 9% of women.

Depressive disorders affect people of all ages and from all walks of life, but there are a number of factors that can increase the risk: namely family history, stressful life changes, psychological factors, low socioeconomic status, sleep disorders, and more.

One of the longest-running theories in depression is of course the brain-chemistry imbalance.

The role of brain chemistry in depression

Certain neurotransmitters – most notably dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine – play a crucial role in mood regulation. Neurotransmitters are chemical substances that help certain parts of the brain communicate with each other. Low amounts of these particular neurotransmitters are thought to contribute to the symptoms associated with clinical depression.

It’s for this reason that most antidepressants are designed to alter levels of certain chemicals in the brain. Some of these treatments include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).

Do they work? Well, according to the research, yes they do – but some better than others.

There are dozens of different antidepressants and “happy pills” available on the market now. The most common drugs used to treat depression include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), and sertraline (Zoloft).

When antidepressants don’t work

A 2009 study from Northwestern University showed that more than half the people who take antidepressants for depression never get relief. The reason for this appears to be that drugs designed to treat depression are aimed at the wrong target.

The researchers behind the study believe that antidepressants are ineffective because they treat stress and/or an imbalance in neurotransmitters in the brain. However, they suggest that the biochemical events that ultimately result in depression actually start in the development and functioning of neurons.

Medications focus on the effect, rather than the cause. This is why they take so long to work, and why they never work at all for some people.

So, if the problem lies in your neurons, how do you treat it?

Well, one possibility could be – providing your neurons with the nutrients and protection they need.

This is where my research has been leading me – how to cure the depression without medicine. How about, how to prevent depression? That would be the ideal situation. I also have enrolled in some classes, and I am learning new skills. Try taking vitamins regularly and invest in yourself.

Here is my list of needed tools to rebuild the chemistry inside your brain. I have lots more but will add them next post.

Einstein & Tesla 2018

What will 2018 bring?

Ten years from today – we will be in 2028.

Could you imagine? Is that the future or what.

I wish you peace, long life, and joy wherever you go.

Happy 2018!

Here is some facts found by BBC.com about Tesla and Einstein, a rather curious read indeed.
Celebrated inventor and physicist Nikola Tesla swore by toe exercises – every night, he’d repeatedly ‘squish’ his toes, 100 times for each foot, according to the author Marc J Seifer. While it’s not entirely clear exactly what that exercise involved, Tesla claimed it helped to stimulate his brain cells.

The most prolific mathematician of the 20th Century, Paul Erdos, preferred a different kind of stimulant: amphetamine, which he used to fuel 20-hour number benders. When a friend bet him $500 that he couldn’t stop for a month, he won but complained “You’ve set mathematics back a month”.

(

Newton, meanwhile, bragged about the benefits of celibacy. When he died in 1727, he had transformed our understanding of the natural world forever and left behind 10 million words of notes; he was also, by all accounts, still a virgin (Tesla was also celibate, though he later claimed he fell in love with a pigeon).

Like it or not, our daily habits have a powerful impact on our brains

Many of the world’s most brilliant scientific minds were also fantastically weird. From Pythagoras’ outright ban on beans to Benjamin Franklin’s naked ‘air baths’, the path to greatness is paved with some truly peculiar habits.

But what if these are more than superficial facts? Scientists are increasingly realising that intelligence is less about sheer genetic luck than we tend to think. According to the latest review of the evidence, around 40% of what distinguishes the brainiac’s from the blockheads in adulthood is environmental. Like it or not, our daily habits have a powerful impact on our brains, shaping their structure and changing the way we think.

We'll never know, but maybe out of shot, Tesla was squishing his toes (Credit: SPL)

Of all history’s great minds, arguably the master of combining genius with unusual habits was Albert Einstein – so what better person to study for clues to mind-enhancing behaviours to try ourselves? He taught us how to squeeze energy out of atoms, so maybe, just maybe, he might be able to teach us a thing or two about how to squeeze the most out of our tiny mortal brains. Could there be any benefits in following Einstein’s sleep, diet, and even fashion choices?

10 HOURS OF SLEEP AND ONE-SECOND NAPS

It’s common knowledge that sleep is good for your brain – and Einstein took this advice more seriously than most. He reportedly slept for at least 10 hours per day – nearly one and a half times as much as the average American today (6.8 hours). But can you really slumber your way to a sharper mind?

The author John Steinbeck once said: “It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.”

Many of the most radical breakthroughs in human history, including the periodic table, the structure of DNA and Einstein’s theory of special relativity, have supposedly occurred while their discoverer was unconscious. The latter came to Einstein while he was dreaming about cows being electrocuted. But is this really true?

Back in 2004, scientists at the University of Lubeck, Germany, tested the idea with a simple experiment. First they trained volunteers to play a number game. Most gradually got the hang of it with practice, but by far the quickest way to improve was to uncover a hidden rule. When the students were tested again eight hours later, those who had been allowed to sleep were more than twice as likely to gain insight into the rules than those who had remained awake.

Those who have more spindle events tend to have greater ‘fluid intelligence’

When we fall asleep, the brain enters a series of cycles. Every 90-120 minutes the brain fluctuates between light sleep, deep sleep and a phase associated with dreaming, known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM), which until recently was thought to play the leading role in learning and memory. But this isn’t the full story. “Non-REM sleep has been a bit of a mystery, but we spend about 60% of our night in this type of sleep,” says Stuart Fogel, a neuroscientist at the University of Ottawa.

Non-REM sleep is characterized by bursts of fast brain activity, so called ‘spindle events’ because of the spindle-shaped zigzag the waves trace on an EEG. A normal night’s sleep will involve thousands of these, each lasting no longer than a few seconds. “This is really the gateway to other stages of sleep – the more you sleep, the more of these events you’ll have,” he says.

Chilling out with physicist Niels Bohr (Credit: SPL)

Chilling out with physicist Niels Bohr (Credit: SPL)

Spindle events begin with a surge of electrical energy generated by the rapid firing of structures deep in the brain. The main culprit is the thalamus, an oval shaped region which acts as the brain’s main ‘switching centre’, sending incoming sensory signals in the right direction. While we’re sleeping, it acts like an internal earplug, scrambling external information to help you stay asleep. During a spindle event, the surge travels up to the brain’s surface and then back down again to complete a loop.

Intriguingly, those who have more spindle events tend to have greater ‘fluid intelligence’ – the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns – the kind Einstein had in spades. “They don’t seem related to other types of intelligence, such as the ability to memorize facts and figures, so it’s really specific to these reasoning skills,” says Fogel. This ties in nicely with Einstein’s disdain for formal education and advice to “never memorize anything which you can look up”.

And though the more you sleep, the more spindle events you’ll have, this doesn’t necessarily prove that more sleep is beneficial. It’s a chicken and egg scenario: do some people have more spindle events because they are smart, or are they smart because they have more spindle events? The jury is still out, but a recent study showed that night-time sleep in women – and napping in men – can improve reasoning and problem solving skills. Crucially, the boost to intelligence was linked to the presence of spindle events, which only occurred during night-time sleep in women and daytime slumbers in men.

It’s not yet known why spindle events would be helpful, but Fogel thinks it may have something to do with the regions which are activated. “We’ve found that the same regions that generate spindles – the thalamus and the cortex [the brain’s surface] – well, these are the areas which support the ability to solve problems and apply logic in new situations,” he says.

Luckily for Einstein, he also took regular naps. According to apocryphal legend, to make sure he didn’t overdo it he’d recline in his armchair with a spoon in his hand and a metal plate directly beneath. He’d allow himself to drift off for a second, then – bam! – the spoon would fall from his hand and the sound of it hitting the plate would wake him up.

DAILY WALKS

Einstein’s daily walk was sacred to him. While he was working at Princeton University, New Jersey, he’d walk the mile and a half journey there and back. He followed in the footsteps of other diligent walkers, including Darwin who went for three 45 minute walks every day.

These constitutionals weren’t just for fitness – there’s mountains of evidence that walking can boost memory, creativity and problem-solving. For creativity at least, walking outside is even better. But why?

When you think about it, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Walking distracts the brain from more cerebral tasks, and forces it to focus on putting one foot in front of the other and not falling over. Enter ‘transient hypofrontality’ – translated into basic English, this impressive mouthful basically means temporarily toning down the activity in certain parts of the brain. In particular, the frontal lobes, which are involved in higher processes such as memory, judgement and language.

By turning it down a notch, the brain adopts a totally different style of thinking – one which may lead to insights you wouldn’t get at your desk. There isn’t any evidence for this explanation of walking’s benefits yet, but it’s a tantalizing idea.

EATING SPAGHETTI

So what do geniuses eat? Alas, it’s not clear what fueled Einstein’s extraordinary mind, though the internet somewhat dubiously claims it was spaghetti. He did once joke that his favorite things about Italy were “spaghetti and [mathematician] Levi-Civita”, so we’ll go with that.

Though carbohydrates have got a bad rep, as always, Einstein was spot on. It’s well known that the brain is a food-guzzling greedy guts, consuming 20% of the body’s energy though it only accounts for 2% of its weight (Einstein’s may have been even less – his brain weighed just 1,230g, compared to an average of around 1,400g). Just like the rest of the body, the brain prefers to snack on simple sugars, such as glucose, which have been broken down from carbohydrates. Neurons require an almost-continuous supply and will only accept other energy sources when it’s really desperate. And therein lies a problem.

Despite this sweet tooth, the brain has no way of storing any energy, so when blood glucose levels drop, it quickly runs out. “The body can release some from its own glycogen stores by releasing stress hormones such as cortisol, but these have side-effects,” says Leigh Gibson, a lecturer in psychology and physiology at the University of Roehampton.

Smoking is not advised, Einstein wouldn’t have been aware of all the health risks (Credit: SPL)

These include the familiar light-headedness and confusion we feel when we skip dinner. One study found that those on low carbohydrate diets have slower reaction times and reduced spatial memory – though only in the short-term (after a few weeks, the brain will adapt to salvaging energy from other sources, such as protein).

Sugars can give the brain a valuable boost, but unfortunately this doesn’t mean binging on spaghetti is a good idea. “Typically the evidence suggests that about 25g of carbohydrate is beneficial, but double that and you may actually impair your ability to think,” says Gibson. For perspective, that’s around 37 strands of spaghetti, which is a lot less than it sounds (around half as much as the recommended portion). “It’s not as simple a story as it sounds,” says Gibson.

SMOKING A PIPE

Today, the many health risks of smoking are widely known, so this is not a habit that it would be wise to follow. But Einstein was a hardened pipe smoker, known as much around campus for the cloud of smoke which followed him as for his theories. He famously loved to smoke, believing it “contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.” He’d even pick cigarette butts off the street and stuff the remaining tobacco into his pipe.

Not really the behavior of a genius, but in his defense, though evidence had been mounting since the 1940s, tobacco wasn’t publicly linked to lung cancer and other illnesses until 1962 – seven years after his death.

Today the risks are no secret – smoking stops brain cells forming, thins the cerebral cortex (the wrinkled outer layer responsible for consciousness) and starves the brain of oxygen. It’s fair to say that Einstein was clever despite this habit – not because of it.

But there is one final mystery. An analysis of 20,000 adolescents in the United States, whose habits and health were followed for 15 years, found that irrespective of age, ethnicity or education, more intelligent children grow up to smoke more cigarettes, more frequently, than the rest of us. Scientists still don’t know why this is, though intriguingly it’s not true everywhere – in the UK, smokers tend to have lower IQs.

Who needs socks? They're generally relatively unnecessary (Credit: Getty Images)

NO SOCKS

No list of Einstein’s eccentricities would be complete without a mention of his passionate aversion to socks. “When I was young,” he wrote in a letter to his cousin – and later, wife – Elsa, “I found out that the big toe always ends up making a hole in a sock. So I stopped wearing socks.” Later in life, when he couldn’t find his sandals he’d wear Elsa’s sling backs instead.

As it turns out, rocking the hipster look probably didn’t do Einstein any favors. Regrettably, there haven’t been any studies looking directly at the impact of going sock-less, but changing into casual clothing, as opposed to a more formal outfit, has been linked to poor performance on tests of abstract thinking.

And what better way to end that with some advice from the man himself. “The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing,” he told LIFE magazine in 1955.

Failing that, you might try some toe exercises. Who knows – they might just work. And aren’t you dying to find out?

Thanksgiving 2017

My good friends at positivehealthwellness have asked me to share a wonderful menu with you all this year.

What a year this has been, I have been shown how to be humble and to show compassion, from our creator.

How to forgive others, and let go of the past.

This year was absolutely crucial in my growth as a person. I give thanks to God, my family, my friends, and the ones who believe in me.

Well, may you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving 2017 and enjoy a few menu suggestions.

Not sure what to make this year?

Here is the ultimate Thanksgiving dinner menu that goes through absolutely everything you need for this year.

Don’t forget the sides and get a turkey dinner to die for!

For the Turkey: 3-Way Roulade

Why not make a Turkey roulade instead of a traditional bird this year. There are a few benefits to this. You will know that all the meat is cooked before you start serving everything up and you create smaller portions for everyone. We always end up overeating at Thanksgiving, and it’s not great for the waistline.

You will also get to avoid the big turkeys. You just need some turkey breasts, helping to keep the costs down.

The 3-way roulade offers three different stuffings for your bird. You can do all three if you’d like, but make sure you stock up on extra turkey breasts. This recipe will give you enough turkey for one filling of choice.

Ingredients:

  • 2 skinless, boneless turkey breasts
  • 1 filling of choice (fillings below)
  • 1 1/2tbsp oil of choice
  • Salt and black pepper, for seasoning
  • Fennel-apple filling ingredients:
  • 1 fennel bulb, chopped
  • 2 apples, cored and chopped
  • 2 shallots, chopped
  • 2tbsp butter
  • 2tbsp fresh tarragon, chopped
  • 2tbsp fennel fronds, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Bacon and Mushroom Filling Ingredients:

  • 4 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1lb mushrooms of choice, chopped
  • 1 bunch of scallions, chopped
  • 1/3 cup of fresh parsley, chopped
  • ¼ cup of dry white wine
  • 3tbsp seasoned breadcrumbs
  • Sea salt and black pepper, to taste

Sausage and Cornbread Filling Ingredients:

  • 8oz of Italian sausage, out of the casing
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 2 cups of cornbread, crumbled
  • 1tbsp fresh thyme, chopped
  • ½ cup of chicken stock
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Method:

  • Preheat your oven to 425F and line a baking sheet with foil
  • Butterfly the turkey breasts, avoiding slicing all the way through
  • Wrap one open breast with cling film and pound to about ¼ inch thick
  • Season the breast with salt and pepper and then repeat with the second
  • Make your filling (method for each below) and then spread half into a turkey breast, pressing into the meat
  • Roll the turkey breast tightly and secure with butcher’s twine, tucking the ends in
  • Repeat with the other turkey breast, roll both breasts into oil, and season with more salt and pepper
  • Place on the baking sheet and cook for 40-45 minutes
  • Stand for 10 minutes and then slice to serve

Fennel and Apple Filling Method:

  • Cook the fennel bulb, shallots, butter, and apple in a skillet over a medium heat until golden
  • Stir in the fennel fronds and tarragon and then season

Bacon and Mushroom Filling Method:

  • Cook the bacon for 6-8 minutes in a skillet over a medium heat
  • Place on a plate and pour away the dripping, apart from 1 1/2tbsp
  • Add the mushrooms to the pan and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally
  • Add in the parsley and scallions, cooking for another 2 minutes
  • Add the wine and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until the wine evaporates
  • Stir in the breadcrumbs and mix everything together, seasoning with the salt and pepper

Sausage and Cornbread Filling Method:

  • Cook the sausage for 5-7 minutes in a skillet over a medium to high heat, breaking the sausage into smaller pieces
  • Add the garlic and cook for another minute
  • Add in the thyme and cornbread and then remove from the heat
  • Stir in the chicken stock to fully combine, and then season with the salt and pepper

For the Sides: Make Rosemary Monkey Bread Stuffing

Even with the stuffed turkey, people will want stuffing on the sides. There’s just something about Thanksgiving that calls for a delicious stuffing to sit on the side to work with the rest of your food options.

This rosemary monkey bread stuffing is perfect. The kids will love the name, and they’ll want to help you make it. Just expect questions about cooking monkeys when you have smaller children!

Ingredients:

  • 1 sweet onion, chopped
  • 4 celery ribs, chopped
  • 4tbsp butter
  • 1 cup of chicken stock
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2lb rosemary focaccia, cubed (if you can’t find the bread, you can use 1 1/2tbsp chopped fresh rosemary)

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 375F and butter a springform pan
  • Cook the onion and celery with the butter in a skillet for 8-10 minutes over a medium heat
  • Transfer to a bowl, allowing to cool for five minutes
  • Whisk the eggs and chicken stock until combined in a bowl and then season with the salt and pepper, and then add the onion and celery mixture
  • Stir in the focaccia
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the bread, is golden brown
  • Cool for 5 minutes and then remove from the pan

This is much better served warm. If you want to use leftovers, reheat in the microwave or oven.

Vegetable Side: Brussels Sprouts Gratin

Nobody likes Brussels sprouts on their own. While you’ll want to get the health benefits of sprouts, you’ll want to make them taste amazing. This gratin is the perfect way to do that.

Ingredients:

  • 3lb of Brussels sprouts, halved and trimmed
  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 2tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of half and half
  • 9oz of Gruyere cheese, grated and divided
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 375F and butter a baking dish
  • Fill a pan with salted water and boil the sprouts for 5-8 minutes
  • Drain the sprouts and rinse with cold water to quickly cool, and then lay them out on a baking sheet lined with paper towels
  • In a saucepan, cook the butter and garlic over medium heat for a minute and then sprinkle with the flour
  • Whisk the mixture for a minute, before adding in the half and half while whisking
  • Simmer for 6-7 minutes, whisking regularly to help thicken
  • Remove from the heat and then add in 6oz of the cheese, whisking, and season with the salt and pepper
  • Pour everything into a baking dish and top with the remaining cheese, and then bake for 25-30 minutes

Allow cooling a little before serving. The kids will barely notice that you’ve served them Brussels sprouts. If you want to go one step further, you can chop the sprouts after cooking to help mix in with the cheese. It’s not quite as filling, but you’ll disguise the fact that you have sprouts!

Potato Side: Slow Cooked Mash

Mashed potatoes

Mash potatoes are a must-have for your Thanksgiving dinner. While they are well cooked normally, these will help to eliminate some of the stress from the day.

Ingredients:

  • 4lb of potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 cups of chicken stock
  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 1/3 cup of chives, fresh and chopped
  • ½ cup of milk, warmed
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Method:

  • In a slow cooker, cook the potatoes with the chicken stock and salt on high for up to 3 hours or low for up to 5 hours
  • Drain the stock and put the potatoes back into the slow cooker
  • Add the sour cream and mash to preferred consistency
  • Fold in the chives and milk, adding more milk if necessary
  • Season to taste and serve, topping with chives if you’d like

You will have people asking for seconds. You may find that this is a Sunday roast mash that you make a lot more regularly than Thanksgiving!

A Side Dish with a Difference: Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Salad

Potato and egg salad is commonly made, but you can opt for something a little different this Thanksgiving. You want to opt for a cauliflower and sweet potato salad instead. You get a mixture of flavors packed with a healthy punch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2lbs sweet potatoes, chopped into wedges
  • 1 cauliflower head, chopped into florets
  • 7tbsp oil of choice, divided
  • 3tbsp sherry vinegar
  • 8 cups of mixed lettuces, torn
  • 2/3 cup of pomegranate seeds
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 425F and line a baking sheet with foil
  • Mix the potatoes, cauliflower, and 3tbsp oil, seasoning with the salt and pepper
  • Roast for 25-30 minutes
  • Whisk the rest of the oil in the vinegar, seasoning with some salt and pepper
  • Add the lettuce, pomegranate, and roasted vegetables and coat everything

With the Brussels sprouts and this potato salad, you will not need any more vegetables on the side. If you want them, just grab some frozen veggies like carrots and peas. You’ll find your guests won’t be that interested in them though.

Time for Dessert: Sweet Potato Snickerdoodles

Whoever said dessert has to be unhealthy and full of sugar? These alternative Snickerdoodles are the way to feed the sweet tooth without feeling like you’re forcing health onto your guests.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 3/4tsp salt
  • 1/4tsp baking soda
  • 1/4tsp cream of tartar
  • 3 1/2tsp cinnamon, divided
  • 1 cup of butter, sat at room temperature
  • 1 can of sweet potato puree
  • 2/3 pt of confectioners’ sugar
  • 2tsp vanilla extract, preferably pure
  • 1 ½ cups of granulated sugar, divided
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 can of dulce de leche

Method:

  • Whisk the flour with the salt, baking soda, 2tsp cinnamon, and cream of tartar
  • In a separate bowl, beat the butter with the puree, 1 cup of granulated sugar, all the confectioners’ sugar, and all the vanilla extract until fluffy
  • Add the eggs to the sweet potato puree mixture one at a time, beating until each one is blended
  • Add the flour mixture until everything is combined
  • Cover and chill for at least 2 hours to overnight
  • Preheat the oven to 375F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper
  • Stir the rest of the cinnamon and sugar together in a bowl
  • Roll up the dough into 1tbsp balls and then roll into the sugared cinnamon
  • Arrange on the baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes
  • Cook for a minute and then place on wire racks to continue cooling
  • Spread the dulce de leche on the flat side of the cookies and sandwich two together

Second Dessert: Pumpkin Cookie Crust Cheesecake

While the sweet potato sandwich cookies are great, they’re just not quite a dessert, right? You want a pie or cake that you can cut into. This is where this second dessert will help. You get a mixture of needs and wants with the pumpkin, the cheesecake, and a delicious cookie crust. Make sure you have room for a second slice. You’ll want it!

Ingredients:

  • 12 pecan sandy cookies, plus extra to garnish
  • ½ cup of pecans, roasted and salted preferably
  • 3tbsp butter, melted
  • 2tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4tsp salt, divided
  • 8oz cream cheese, left at room temperature
  • 8oz of sour cream, left at room temperature
  • 1 cup of light brown sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 15 oz of pure pumpkin puree
  • 2tsp vanilla extract, preferably pure
  • 1 1/2tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2tsp ground nutmeg

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 350F and place the rack in the middle
  • Place the pecans and cookies in a blender and pulse until ground finely
  • Add the butter, granulated sugar, a 1/4tsp salt, and pulse until combined
  • Press the mixture into the bottom of a springform pan and then bake for 10-12 minutes
  • Allow to cool completely in the pan and then wrap the pan with aluminum foil
  • Reduce the oven to 300F
  • Beat the cheese with the brown sugar and sour cream until smooth and then add the eggs one at a time, beating each one
  • Add the rest of the ingredients with the remaining salt, and beat until blended
  • Pour the mixture into the cookie crust and bake for 1hr 10 minutes; the edges will be set, but the middle will still be wobbly
  • Turn the oven off and leave the cheesecake in with door closed for an hour
  • Remove from the oven and loosen the sides of the cheesecake from the pan with a knife gently, keeping the pan intact
  • Allow to cook for an hour and then cover and chill for at least 8 hours

Only after chilling should you remove from the pan. This helps to keep the setting, so the cheesecake doesn’t end up an unserviceable mess! Serve with some of the pecans, cookies, and a bit of whipped cream!

My thanks to Danielle and her team. Have a wonderful Holiday!
